PETALING JAYA: The 2023 budget will be tabled on Feb 24, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul said.
Speaking to Malay daily Berita Harian, he said the budget would be tabled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister.
Johari said the tabling and debate would take three weeks.
“Yes, the 2023 budget will be tabled on Feb 24 because the previous budget was only for operating expenditure and salaries (for civil servants),” he said.
“Overall, the budget tabling and debate, as well as the committee and policy matters, will take 21 days.”
He also said that the first sitting of the 15th parliamentary session will begin on Feb 13 and go on for 29 days.
The previous budget, which was presented by the Ismail Sabri Yaakob led government in October, was not approved as Parliament was dissolved to make way for the 15th general election which installed Anwar as the new prime minister.
On Dec 20, the Dewan Rakyat passed a RM107.7 billion temporary operating budget.
This was mainly to pay salaries of civil servants and other related operational expenditure to ensure the smooth operations of the government until the new budget is passed.
