PETALING JAYA: Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan says that the much-awaited political financing bill must protect donors from victimisation by the government of the day.
The Tasek Gelugor MP said a prerequisite for transparency in political financing was a guarantee that donors would not be victimised for supporting the political parties of their choice.
“So I am lobbying for a clause to be included,” said Wan Saiful in an interview on Astro Awani.
“That guarantee must be there because otherwise, there will be victimisation (of donors) and that is not good.”
In September, then law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that a political financing bill would be tabled in November.
However, in October, it was reported that the bill was not ready and that it was still being studied by the government.
Subsequently, Parliament was dissolved to pave way for the 15th general election.
Politicians and NGOs have been pushing for a political financing law for years following reports that then-prime minister Najib Razak received a US$681 million (RM2.99 billion) political donation in his personal account.
